As part of a Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) project to extend the existing system 16-miles to the north to connect with the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) System, MGE completed the design of two depressed trench structures. The two trench structures 4 and 5 with lengths of 1826-ft and 1118-ft respectively, consist of depressed “U” structures utilizing deep soil mix walls as temporary shoring to facilitate construction. The structures themselves consist of cast-in-place reinforced concrete walls supported on a bottom slab, and accommodate two ballasted tracks.
