This project is located in El Dorado County, south of U.S. Highway 50 near the town of Riverton, CA. The project consisted of the replacement of an existing structurally deficient timber bridge that provides the only vehicle access to the Plum Creek Siphon and Camp 2 house. The bridge is owned and maintained by the El Dorado Irrigation District. The project also included rock scaling, rock stabilization, and the installation of rock netting. MGE was selected by the District to design the replacement structure in 2011. Although replacement bridges were evaluated, MGE developed an innovative alternative to a bridge consisting of a reinforced concrete buttressed retaining wall structure. The replacement structure utilizes transverse buttress walls with tiedown anchors to secure the wall structure to the steep granite surface. The structure also features a cantilever concrete overhang to minimize the height of the wall, and was backfilled with crushed rock. The buttressed wall structure has the advantage of lower construction costs and less long term maintenance. Construction of the project was completed in November 2015.
