MGE prepared the Type Selection Report and completed the design and PS&E for the replacement of an existing five-span timber girder bridge spanning the Susan River on the Biz Johnson Train within the Lassen National Forest. As the Biz Johnson Trail Bridge is considered a historical property eligible for the National Register of Historical Places, the bridge alternatives considered were required to maintain the aesthetic character of the existing structure. The selected alternative consisted of a single-span steel girder structure with false timber bents matching the existing bents, timber sheathing at the exterior girders, and timber facing at concrete abutments to maintain the appearance of a multi-span timber structure.
